Roles and Responsibilities
The Lord-Lieutenant is His Majesty’s personal representative for the County. Their primary duty is to uphold the dignity of the Crown and fulfill key functions. In general, the Lord-Lieutenant will follow the example of The King, and other members of the Royal Family, by seeking to promote a good atmosphere and a spirit of co-operation; by the encouragement given to voluntary service, benevolent organisations, local business and to the social life of the County.
The Role of the Lord Lieutenant
The post is strictly non-political and is unpaid.
The Lord-Lieutenant holds office until the age of 75, unless they pass away or seek His Majesty’s permission to retire earlier (usually due to ill health).

- Arranging Royal visits
- Represent The King, or other members of the Royal Family, at events
- Arrange invitations to Royal Garden parties
- Support and promote a wide range of voluntary activity and develop links with civic, enterprise and social leaders in the County to encourage a sense of community
- Support local business, including making visits to local businesses
- Support the Armed Forces, and their Cadet Associations, and the local Volunteer Reserve Forces.
- Play an active part in the honours system, increasing public awareness of the honours system, encouraging nominations, helping to assess nominations, and presenting certain honours, medals and awards on behalf of The King (for example: CBEs, OBEs, MBEs, BEMs, Queen’s Award for Enterprise, Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and the Elizabeth Cross).
- Presenting messages of congratulations from His Majesty to those celebrating 100th Birthday or 60th Wedding Anniversaries.
- Preside over Citizenship Ceremonies to welcome new UK citizens resident in Northern Ireland
- Select and appoints Deputy Lieutenants and a Vice Lord-Lieutenant.
